Does size matter? – Thoughts on breast size, attitudes towards it and breast reduction

16 Apr

Now I’m going to talk about something that has been bothering me for a while. As I was visiting my in-laws last weekend I got a copy of a ladies’ magazine called Kauneus & Terveys (Beauty & Health in English) and there on the pages stood a piece on breasts. Hallelujah! Has someone at last wrote something worthy and helpful? After reading the text itself I realized my hopes had gone too high and the piece was not that informative, at all. My enthusiasm turned into pure loathe as I read all about breast reduction, scars and back pain.

First of all, the magazine defined D-cup as “6-7 desilitres of fat tissue”. Come on! You can do better than that. As most of you (hopefully) know at this point D-cups are not all the same size. That 6-7 dl assumption was just plain ridiculous, since cupsize is always relative to bandsize. The smaller your band is, the smaller the cups get. E.g.  a 38F is definitely not the same in cup volume as a 30F, it’s actually four cupsizes bigger. The lack of knowledge was spilling out of the paper and it just got worse.

After reading some lovely “facts” about breasts the story went on to breast reduction. First I have to tell I’m definitely not judging anyone one having a surgery when suffering on your breast size. You’re the only person who knows your body well enough to decide what to do with it. What I’m saying instead is that these desicions should not be made lightly and should only be made after trying on several bras since many women who have found their correct size have forgotten about the whole surgery and even enjoyd their breasts in a well-fitting bra. Ok, that was my opinion. What seemed to be the magazine’s opinion was that big breasts are a plague and those women with such things should be pityed. And on top of that all of the options that were showed as bras for DD+ ladies were minimizers! My god, I felt like we were in the same point as we were ten years back in time. I was completely stunned by the attitude of the writer since I have suffered from having the wrong bra, not the wrong breasts. There was a tiny teeny little box telling something about bra fit (quite spot-on actually) but the whole story about making your boobs look smaller outnumbered the good things that were written in that box.

I am absolutely blown away by the cultural gap that we have to e.g British knowledge on bra fitting. After so many articles written on the matter on Finnish newspapers and magazines I was hoping we would have gotten somewhere with all those words and information. Nevertheless we have taken just baby steps when it comes to finding the perfect fit and the articles described as before are not helping us. As opposed to having bad attitudes towards big boobs we should instead embrace our different shapes and sizes just the way I saw was done in a British documentary which discussed breast size and fit issues. Sure the girl on doc though 30FF was huge but hey, she’ll probably get used to it more easily than the scars from breast reduction. (In this particular documentary her saviour was ta-dah, our beloved Bravissimo who refitted her). If you’re unsure what to do to your body just think about different options and get enough information since in some cases, those boobs you hate so much, aren’t even that big. You can blame it on the bra!Image

Psst! Go and check out the Bravissimo Boob School since they have some great tips for finding the right bra.
